Unveiling Bratislava’s Craft Beer Scene: An Idyllic Afternoon of Tastings

During my recent trip to Vienna I also reserved a day for Bratislava. The bus ride to Bratislava is only an hour from Vienna. I’d heard great things about Slovakia’s capitol city. Guess what I chose for a tour? I went on a Craft Beer Tour through Taste Bratislava.

Not only was it the beer that made the decision the right one, but also the fact that the choice was so good. Find out why by reading on!

Bratislava, Beer

Bratislava can be overlooked or overshadowed in favor of the neighboring capitals. Bratislava is often overlooked or rushed in favor of its neighboring capitals. Bratislava, on the other hand, is a friendly and cozy city that instantly makes you feel like home. Even though I only spent a short time in Bratislava, the experience was enough for me to plan a return trip.

Prague won the popularity contest in the beer category as well. After doing both a Brewery Tour and Craft Beer Tour in Bratislava I can say with confidence that you won’t be thirsty there.

Taste Bratislava

Taste Bratislava offers tours that combine culture and food to create unique experiences. Not only can you discover Bratislava but also Slovak wine, beer and food. Even a day-trip from Vienna is organized, making it easy for you to get to Bratislava.

Review of Step-by-Step Procedure

The Bratislava Craft Beer Tour usually covers two locations where you can sample 10 different beers. It sounds good to have less walking and more beer.
We had a tour that was a little more personal. We tasted local beers at 4 different locations.

Meeting Point

Daniela met us in front of Radisson Blu Hotel Carlton in Bratislava’s central area. The Radisson Blu Carlton Hotel is located in central Bratislava, just across from the Old Town. Between them was a street food festival on the weekend.Daniela has a Taste Bratislava Guide.

Our Guide

Daniela founded Taste Bratislava. She began running tours in 2014. She realized soon that this was her passion. In 2016, she focused on presenting what was best about her hometown, and the business has grown ever since. Tourists are returning to Bratislava after a difficult time during the pandemic. The craft beer tour has been the most popular activity.

Daniela redirected us away from the crowded central streets after meeting us. All stops were in the historic center, but out of tourists’ way.

Craft beer places in Bratislava

You will never be able to find places on your own. It’s one of their best features.

First Stop – Klastorny Pivovar

First stop, a place rich in history. A priory operates a hospital at that address. What’s the connection between this and our beer tour? The monastery rented a part of its building to Flag Ship, one of Europe’s largest restaurants. They also use the underground cellar, which is a historic building, to make their own beer under the name Klastorny Pivovar. The money will allow the priory to continue running the hospital and helping the community.

Apart from beer, the restaurant also serves excellent traditional Slovak cuisine. The lager was light, refreshing and ideal for a sunny afternoon. We also tried a local speciality, a spread made with peppers and sheep cheese that pairs well with beer.Monastic Lager Beer Bratislava

Second Stop – Shenk

Shenk loves to experiment with its beers. They enjoy brewing with different grains such as rice or corn. You never know what’s going to be on the menu.

On the day that we visited, they had a Jasmine Rice Beer. It sounds strange, doesn’t it? It was not. It tasted like strong jasmine, but bitter and cold. It was great. I loved it.

The beer was my favorite of the entire tour. However, the two other places were battling for the top spot.

Third Stop – 100 Piv

A small beer shop and bar, 100 Piv was another local treasure we never would have found.

We began with two sour beer. The strawberry beer was a pleasant treat, even though I am not a big fan. The NEIPA by SIBEERIA was my favorite.Craft beer is available at 100 Piv in Bratislava

Daniela is a beer expert and shared her knowledge with us. The story explaining why Slovaks love beer was my favorite.

The Slovaks, being a religious nation, wanted to know if they could drink beer in the Lenten period, as wine was not allowed. They sent some local beer over to the Pope for his opinion. The beer was not preserved at the time and it took a long journey to reach the Vatican. The beer was spoiled when it arrived at its destination. The Pope tried the unknown beverage, found it to be really bad and told the Slovaks they could drink as much as they liked.

The Slovaks followed the ruling closely and beer remains a very important part of local life.

The Beerdock – Final Stop

We had already tasted enough beer by this point, so we only tried the three samples. Daniela chose the best items on the menu based on both our and her preferences.

GOSE beer was the star. Gose was originally brewed in Goslar, Germany. It is a sour ale, but its uniqueness comes from the saltiness. I don’t think I would order it very often, but this was the first time I had ever tried one.

Dockbeer, a craft beer bar on a dock with sweeping views of the Danube, was the ideal place to finish the tour.Beerdock View:
