Vesuvius: Facts and information Vesuvius

What is Mount Vesuvius and where can you find it?

Mount Vesuvius, located in Italy’s western coast, is south of Rome and overlooks Naples Bay.

What is Mount Vesuvius known for?

Mount Vesuvius’ most notable eruption was in 79 AD. The Vesuvius buried and destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Mount Vesuvius was a single cone that stood at a height of approximately 1281 meters before the eruption. It still dominates the Bay of Naples and reminds the 3,000,000 residents of the area of its permanent danger.

Vesuvius an active volcano? Vesuvius a Volcano Active?

Vesuvius was the only European volcano to erupt in the past century (during World War 2) The last eruption was in 1944. Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano and will likely erupt once again.

Mount Vesuvius has been rated as one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes. This is probably accurate, considering its history and the population density around it.Vesuvius from Naples. Vesuvius as seen from Naples

Mount Vesuvius: How to reach it

Ercolano

Vesuvio express is a sign that you’ll see on your left as you leave the Ercolano train station. The shuttle will transport you to a parking lot located at 1000 meters above sea level. You will arrive in 20 minutes and have 90 minutes of walking time to explore the crater and take in the view. The ticket costs 10EUR and the entrance fee to Vesuvius Park another 10EUR. If you pay only for the ride, you’ll have to walk a few hundred meters back to the parking lot to pay for the entrance fee.

From Pompeii

Busvia del Vensuvio is a shuttle that runs from the Pompeii Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station. The cost is 22EUR and the trip takes three hours. For 40EUR, they offer a tour that includes a wine tasting of Lacryma Christi.

The EAV Bus is a cheaper alternative. The ticket costs 2.70 EUR each way and takes 50 minutes. The ticket office is located on the mountain where you can also pay your entrance fee.

What to Expect

The trail begins in the parking area at an elevation of approximately 1000 meters. The walk isn’t very difficult but takes between 20 and 35 minutes. There are a few steep hills. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, water and a hat if it is a sunny day. The black lava and lack of shadows make it difficult to stay cool. The final part of the trail leads to the crater

The entrance ticket includes a tour guide in theory, but I’ve never seen anyone leading a group.
